Woods, cardboards and other materials
Wood, cardboard and other materials waterjet cutting with TamCut
TamCut can be used for flexible cutting of wood-based, fibre-based and other special sheet materials with a compact industrial waterjet machine. Cut flat shapes, holes, openings and detailed 2D geometries without heat, burning or material-specific cutting tools.
Overview
Flexible cutting for wood, cardboard and special materials
TamCut is suitable for many applications where flat sheet materials need to be cut flexibly without dedicated tooling. Waterjet cutting can be useful for plywood, thin wood, cardboard, paper, fibre materials and other special materials where shapes, holes or internal contours are needed. Because waterjet cutting is a cold cutting process, the material is not exposed to high cutting temperatures. This helps avoid burning, charring and heat marks that can occur with thermal cutting methods.
Material behaviour varies significantly in this category, so test cutting is especially important for wood, paper, cardboard, porous, layered or absorbent materials.

Who uses Tamcut
Who uses TamCut for wood, cardboard and special material cutting?
Product development teams
Product development teams can use TamCut to test shapes, materials and prototypes quickly without waiting for external suppliers or dedicated tooling.
R&D and laboratories
TamCut is suitable for research and testing environments where different sheet materials, samples and experimental geometries need to be produced flexibly.
Education and technical training
Schools, universities and technical training centres can use TamCut to demonstrate waterjet cutting, material processing and digital manufacturing workflows across many material types.
Machine shops
Machine shops can use TamCut for mixed-material work, prototypes, support parts and special flat components that do not fit easily into one standard cutting process.
Production teams
Production teams can use TamCut for templates, test pieces, protective sheets, packaging-related samples and other low-volume flat parts.
Maintenance teams
Maintenance and repair teams can use TamCut to produce templates, covers, spacers, packing pieces and other custom flat parts from suitable materials.
Applications
Typical applications
Plywood and thin wood parts
Cut flat plywood parts, templates, panels, prototype components and special shapes without heat marks or burning.
Cardboard and paper samples
Produce packaging samples, test pieces, templates and flat shapes from suitable cardboard and paper materials.
Fibre materials
Cut fibre-based sheet materials, samples and test geometries for R&D, production support or product development.
Templates and production aids
Create templates, spacer plates, support pieces and other flat production aids from suitable sheet materials.
Prototypes
Cut prototype parts from wood-based, fibre-based or special materials without dedicated tooling.
Special materials
Use TamCut to evaluate unusual sheet materials where conventional cutting methods are too slow, too hot or too inflexible.
Honest fit
Best fit for TamCut wood, cardboard and special material cutting
TamCut is a strong fit when you need flexible in-house cutting for different flat sheet materials and changing geometries. If you are unsure, send us your material and drawing. We will help evaluate whether TamCut is the right fit.
Best suited for
TamCut is a strong fit
TamCut is a strong fit when you need flexible in-house cutting for many different materials and flat part geometries.

When another method may be better
Consider another process
TamCut is not intended to replace every cutting method. In some cases, another process may be more suitable.
- High-volume paper or cardboard converting
- Applications where wet edges are not acceptable
- Very absorbent materials without process validation
- Thick solid wood parts
- Decorative edges that require a dry cutting process
- Very high-speed straight cutting
- Jobs where knife cutting, die cutting, routing, sawing or laser cutting is clearly faster or more cost-efficient
Why it works
Why waterjet cutting works well for these materials
Seven properties of the process explain why one machine can handle steel, glass, rubber and carbon fiber alike.
01
No burning or heat marks
Waterjet cutting is a cold cutting process. Wood-based and fibre-based materials are not exposed to high cutting temperatures, which helps avoid burning, charring and heat marks.
02
No material-specific cutting tool
The same waterjet cutting process can be used for many different flat materials and geometries without changing blades, dies or milling tools.
03
Suitable for holes and internal contours
Waterjet cutting makes it possible to cut holes, slots, openings and internal shapes directly from a drawing.
04
Flexible for changing designs
TamCut is useful when part geometries change, when only a few parts are needed or when material suitability needs to be tested.
05
Good fit for prototypes and samples
TamCut helps produce prototypes, templates, packaging samples and test pieces quickly from different sheet materials.
06
Supports mixed-material workshops
For workshops that handle many material types, TamCut provides one flexible cutting method for a broad range of flat parts.
07
Important note on material suitability
Wood, cardboard, paper and special materials vary significantly in thickness, absorbency, fibre structure, coating, layering and required edge quality. Waterjet cutting introduces water into the cutting process, so some absorbent or porous materials may need drying, testing or another cutting method.
For demanding, expensive or unfamiliar materials, we recommend a test cut before production.
